Judy Moody and the Not Bummer Summer (2011)

"Third grader Judy Moody sets out to have the most thrilling summer of her life." (imdb.com)

Viewed once in theaters

(Not to worry, friends...I didn't purposely sit in a theater and watch this entire movie. It was just really really slow one day.)

The subjects of kids' movies ranges from animated animals to goofy superheroes, but there's always space for the summer. There's just something about kids and summer that begs for movies to be made about them. Another staple of movies aimed at children is the presence of an all-knowing, mischievous main character, usually an underdog in social circles, who is ten times smarter than the adults in her life and is completely in control.

Enter Judy Moody, a film about a smart-aleck girl who plans to have the "best summer ever!" When her summer plans start to look sour, she comes up with a genius plan to avoid a lame vacation. She calls it the "Judy Moody Mega-Rare NOT Bummer Summer Dare!" It's a system where she and her friends rack up "Thrill Points" for everything they do: Riding an elephant. Watching a scary movie. Tracking down Bigfoot. Along the way, she has to deal with her super-snide brother (Stink) and her ultra-cool Aunt Opal (an artist/flake like you've never seen before).

The main character apparently knows everything; she's always rolling her eyes at how silly the adults are. She can't believe her friends would ditch her for a summer of fun. Her parents come across as idiots, simply because they draw a line and decide they can't afford a lavish vacation to Borneo. All in all, this is one of the most demeaning, obnoxious, and pointless movies directed at children. (The movie is also classified as a box-office flop, with a budget of  $20 million, it only brought in $15 million.) I'd say bypass this one and hang out with more substantial movie friends, like Rapunzel from Tangled or even Greg Heffley (Diary of a Wimpy Kid), who has flaws of his own but teaches better lessons.
