OK, so anybody who pays any attention to current events in entertainment knows about the massive leviathan that is The Blind Side. From stories about the heartwarming aspects of the story to stories about the phenomenal performance of the ever-talented Sandra Bullock, we all have heard something about this film. The core of the story seems to fit the bill: a Cinderella film, a hidden talent, a loving family, football--it looks like this movie has it all! I came into the viewing of this film with great and wonderful expectations.
I was only barely disappointed. The film is very, very good, with an enduring story, an endearing group of characters, and alot of fantastic things to say about tough issues like racism, family, and hard work. However, the film really is not a typical hero's journey through a tough life in football. It sometimes even isn't about football at all. In a way, it feels like the advertisements put all of the football shots in front to get the sports lovers in the theaters. Really, though, I did like this film. It's loving, funny, and entertaining.
Another problem I had was the length and pace of the film. The movie clocks in at over two hours long, and it's just a bit too slow. The absence of football is one reason for the pace of the film; I think that another major reason is the depth and immensity of the issues being dealt with. When themes like racism, drug abuse, family, teamwork, protectiveness, poverty, the true mission of Christians, class, etc. are being explored, of course one would want to take alot of time to make sure the issues are handled adequately.
NEGATIVES:
>>There is a good bit of profanity, but somehow we feel as if it "fits" with the southern rednecks, Memphis elite, and people "from the hood." Granted, there is quite a bit of it, but it doesn't by any means demean the story or take away from the ride of the film.
>>Violence? Yeah, just a little, in the form of very nominal football violence, a pretty scary car wreck, a fist fight, and some spunky personalities.
>>This film is almost reverent with Southern Christianity, treating it as a way of life for the characters, and it is obvious that the Faith is a big deal to alot of these people. It's not really championed, nor is it really made a big point in the film, but it is treated well and it is respectfully given a place of honor.
>>There is a scene between the married couple that is a pretty obvious build-up to...um, well, let's just say the scene doesn't go too far, but it goes far enough that we get the idea this couple loves each other and has a healthy relationship.
This film is definitely amazing, and it will last with me for quite some time. Even if it's a bit long, a bit slow, and has a bit too much language, I enjoyed it alot. Sandra Bullock truly does an amazing job and brings a perpetually spunky character to life on the screen. She certainly deserved her Best Actress Oscar, and there is alot of potential for her in the future as she shows off her acting abilities here. All in all, I like this film and would highly recommend it.

I absolutely loved this movie! My mom loved it too. I think we both agreed that Tim McGraw was just an ok actor but Sandra Bullock stole the show!
